2004, after viewing all the citations I have the impression, that ball lighning does not exist in the real world. Its probably similar to the Roswell rumor and similar things. A never ending story. 2006 a kolleague told me about his observation of a fireball tens of years ago. So I think that there is still a chance of real existence of fireballs.
I expect that photonic crystals have the potential to change the world dramaticaly like ball lightning would do.
